Story Synopsis

The Lottery and The Summer People are 2 separate stories written by Shirley Jackson. For our Teen Main Stage Production this year, we will be running both shows in a Double Feature format, similar to Summer Repertory Theatre in which those cast play roles in multiple shows. If cast, you will be performing in both shows, and while these stories are both written by the same author, the setting, plot, time period, and overall “feel” of the shows are different. These shows are HEAVIER in nature and deal with things that audiences tend to find unsettling or creepy. The Lottery is a chilling story depicting a small American town and an annual ritual that ensures a good harvest. This show will be using a Rural American accent. The Summer People is a suspenseful short story about an older couple who break tradition by staying at their summer vacation home later in the season than they usually do. This show will be using a Generic American accent. Both shows are widely available, including a more in depth description, on a basic Google search. (help with these specific accents is also just as easy to find with a simple Google search.) The Lottery is a popular short story usually taught in Middle and/or High School.

Audition Details

Auditions will be held in a small group format and consist of cold reads from the script. The Director would like the cold reads from The Lottery sides to be in a Rural American accent, and the cold reads from The Summer People sides to be in a Generic American accent. We will make every effort to allow you to read for a specific character if you wish and if a side and the time is available, HOWEVER, by auditioning you understand you may not be cast in the role you want (or may not be cast at all) and agree that if you are cast, to play whatever role you are cast in to the best of your ability. We encourage our auditioners to research the show on their own to prepare for the audition and to become familiar with the story and the characters. BE AWARE THAT IF YOU ARE CAST, YOU WILL BE CAST IN BOTH SHOWS. Please come in clothes that allow freedom of movement while allowing you to remain appropriately covered. Out of respect for the age range and for your safety, crop tops, tube tops, sports bras with no over shirt, short shorts or skirts, high heels, and/or open toed shoes are strongly discouraged. Hair should be styled so that it remains out of your face during the audition process. We appreciate you dressing to impress, however, we also want you to be comfortable and able to move!
This show is NOT a musical! There is no need to prepare a song. PREPARATION FOR THIS AUDITION WILL STRICTLY BE ACCENT WORK. Register for your audition time after reading all information here by clicking the link. Please arrive 15 minutes before your audition time to fill out required Audition Paperwork. Parents, please be prepared to help your children and available to sign the paperwork. Check the rehearsal and performance dates on the calendar here for scheduling conflicts. Be sure to list these on your Audition Sign Up and on the Audition Information Sheets that will be available at auditions. Please double check the section above for audition details and come prepared with and to perform your audition selections. All specific audition information is above and arriving prepared will help your audition experience. Please wear comfortable, modest clothing and athletic sneakers, dance/jazz shoes. You may learn a short bit of choreography to determine movement ability. Be prepared to take direction and be willing to show character traits. Please keep in mind that your audition group may include anyone ranging from the age of 13 – 19 years of age. We request your dress be appropriate for this age range as we cannot guarantee you won’t be in a group with a much younger or older auditioner.

Rehearsal Dates

Rehearsals are very important. We do try our best to work around conflicts that are disclosed at the time of auditions/at the Parent Cast Meeting. Conflicts will not necessarily prevent you from being cast, however this is a case by case basis depending on the amount of conflicts. Also, an addition of last minute conflicts may result in being asked to leave the show if the amount of conflicts becomes excessive or problematic.
Rehearsals will be every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays beginning Thursday, May 14th – May 29th. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays will rehearse from 6-8:30pm. Saturday rehearsals, May 16th and May 29th will be from 9am – 3pm and Saturday, May 30th, the rehearsal will be from 9am – 5pm. We will rehearse (or perform!) every day the week of June 1st – June 6th, and this is known as Tech Week. Call times may begin as early as 4:30pm and we are hopeful that rehearsals will end by 9:pm, however this is dependent on the runtime of the actual show. Dress Rehearsal is June 4th at 7pm, and performance dates are June 5th at 7pm & June 6th at 2pm and 7pm. *NO CONFLICTS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR June 1st – June 6th.*
